Please post more details. We are a bit confused. AbanteCart is eCommerce software created to sell products, so we have not settings to remove 'add to cart'. You can try Login Display Prices: setting in Admin-System-Setting Checkout Tab this will hide/Show prices and 'add to cart' button if customer is not logged in.
To remove 'Login' link in the header go to Admin-Design-Menu and remove 'login'.

You need to edit all templates (tpl files) that contain button add to cart.

Since there are quite a few places, you need to do some research. Look into directories
 storefront/view/default_html5/template/pages/product
 storefront/view/default_html5/template/pages/checkout

I am interested in this post, as I would like to be able to remove the 'add to cart' button from the category view but not the product view...It is confusing to me that you would add to cart from the category in the html5 template...as you want to add to cart in the product where all the details for the product are...

Can this be changed in the next upgrade for the cart...or at least to have the option of having it there or not...?

I am not clear of the issue. Add to cart work same across all the product listing pages.
We can not have settings for every page individually. 

If you need to edit particular page, you can edit template file for this page and change 'add to cart' button.

Yes, that is fine...
Where I do not want to see it is on Category Pages

Please check out my site loveisreal-believe.com ...  click  category from products drop down menu. Products/ T-shirts you will see page with 5 (products) t-shirts on it...this is category page, however it has add to cart under each type of t-shirt.

How do I remove the add to cart button from the category page?
