Supported browser versions
« on: December 12, 2013, 10:15:43 AM »
Is there any information on supported browsers versions for the Abantecart's storefront (default HTML5 template)?
Thanks!

This is an excellent question Junkyard!

You seem quite savvy about most things, so you probably already know there are website browser test tools that can be run.  But in case you don't  :)

This one is free - does take awhile to run, but is informational - has NO Android

http://browsershots.org

Their fee based one here is better and does have a 7 day free trial.

http://crossbrowsertesting.com/

this one is good  and does include Apple, Android,  iOS, Opera Mobil  Has a limited free trial.

Thanks heaps, Lee!    We'll surely try the links.   Nonetheless, we are still interested to know what's the developers' take on this - specifically,  what are the major browser's versions (IE,FF,Chrome,Opera) known to have passed the QA by the Abantecart team.   For instance, we had a user with Internet Explorer 6.0 today who had reported some issues, and had we known this stuff in advance we could've explain him that IE 6.0 just isn't officially supported..

HTML5 template support IE8+, other browsers with latest versions. Since FireFox, Chrome and Opera updates out very very often there is no way to test on old versions.
For example Chrome issue new version each month, FireFox each 2-3 weeks

About IE6 please see Global average stats for IE:
only 0.1 % of users use IE6, so what is the idea to support old and buggy browsers? By the way HTML5 technology not supported in IE6

Thank you for the detailed clarification.  BTW, Abantecart works just fine in IE7 too,  so we suggest testing the new releases in IE7 as well, because we heard many users do not have their browsers updated on various reasons, and some just browse with what they happen to have in their old laptop or office/home desktop. This is especially so among Windows users who cannot easily upgrade IE, and also more common in the developing countries.
Global average stats from w3schools.com was interesting, however, we do not know that we believe if that can be representative of the Abantecart's audiences: these stats were built from w3schools.com's website own access log, and w3schools is a website for web-developers, so their stats mainly represent web developers browsers usage. ???
What we have found, in fact, according to Wikipedia the most common web browser internationally as of November 2013 is actually still Internet Explorer:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers
Shipped with windows, IE is often a "choice" of beginner users even though it's the slowest and the least convenient browser we have ever seen!
Anyway, there is a proverb about the stats: "there are lies, big lies and the statistics",  so one has to check it for their own website to know for sure.
