I tried to modify the invoice template in template/pages/account but I still can't see the effect. any tips? thanks

you can find the file to edit at the following location

admin/view/default/template/responses/sale/order_invoice.tpl

this will change the invoice view on the admin site, also if you want to print it for dispatch or otherwise
