You can change default sorting in your AbanteCart admin panel. Go to Admin > System > Settings >General
and look for Sort Products as default by

Hi. Note your changes somewhere and after upgrade apply again. For the Dev tools it is for developers but you can try it too. Follow link and download Dev Tools source then upload Dev Tools 1.2 to your extensions folder

Maybe you have not permission to create new folders. Try to create this folder manually via FTP

In case you can not access admin you can locate error log directly in the file /system/logs/error.txt

By the way if your hosting support Cpanel you can install AbanteCart with 1 click automatically check this guide http://docs.abantecart.com/pages/install/options/cpanel_installation.html

Hi. We would like to help you but we can not control your server configuration.
What you can do to find solution:
1. Make sure you have latest AbanteCart version (1.2.4) (Please backup before upgrade!)
2. In case you have latest version try to compare all core files with source https://github.com/abantecart/abantecart-src
You can do this easily with compare soft (For example Beyond Compare utility can compare your local folder and ftp source  ;) ). Main goal to check if some files are corrupted or modified
3. Disable any special redirections/settings/security limitation in .htaccess or php.ini
4. And lost one but maybe you can try it first  :D - Please contact with your hosting provider This helps in 90% of issues and cover all server's related problems

This is known issue with default Sort by. I am sure it was fixed before.
What is your AbanteCart version?
