I hate to ask about setting up taxes...but I am

There are no errors in the error log. 

Regarding assigning the Tax Class to the products in the cart, I'm not sure what that means, so probably not.  How do I do that?  (Thank you)

In System/Settings/Store Details the Default Tax Class is set. Is that what you are referring to?

No, open your product in admin and check is it assigned to the Tax Class

Ah.  Well, I checked a handful of products and none had a Tax Class assigned to them.  Do I need to update them all manually?
