I assume you're talking about the SEO URL button located in System>Settings>System

Make sure you follow these steps, otherwise your links will end up as 404 page not found.

QuoteTo use SEO URL's apache module, mod-rewrite must be installed and you need to rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

Contact your hosting provider to find out if you have mod-rewrite installed on your server and if not, ask them to install it. Once you have accomplished that, you'll need to navigate to your root directory. There you'll find that file .htaccess.txt - Rename it by removing the .txt at the end. That file will allow the system to rewrite the php URL's to a named page, like http://yourwebsite.com/mycoolsunglasses.html instead of http://yourwebsite.com/index.php?rt=product/product&path=65_74&product_id=113

I know people like to see that sort of thing, but as an old hand at SEO, it really doesn't matter. The BOT's see the links and scan the pages and rank them on the content. AbanteCart does such an excellent job of creating SEO rich product pages, the friendly URL isn't really required.

However, if you want to see those named pages instead of the php generated links, you'll need to follow those steps above.

Is there a way to do this on a windows server?

gordontaylor

Not sure, but, if it's running a php database then I'd yes, I've never used a Windows server...

I did... and tried rewriting in Windows Server... which will have major impications on CPU use, compared to Linux.

Stick with Linux or BSD with Apache or Lighttpd or NginX +rewritemod

Exactly!  Do stick with Linux. Even though there are MySQL and even Apache for Windows, Windows servers prefer IIS and MSSQL/sqlite stuff, and require adaptive modifications. Even if PHP itself is multiplatform, implementing Abantecart support for Windows (for the sake of marketing popularity) would mean distraction of limited dev resources and introducing new bugs, thereby constantly impacting quality of the mainstream, Linux-based product..
