out of stock status

I have inventory stock field under system, settings, general that says "No Stock Auto Disable" the bubble of help indicates
"Disable your product if stock drops to zero" This is set on.  I assume with this set to on a product when stock goes to zero will no longer appear which i what I want.

What I have is some products when out of stock show "out of stock" or greyed "In Stock" when orders are being placed, and some items just don't appear any longer.

I have checked each product and cannot figure out why some disappear and some do not.  Confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

This will work only if you have track stock enabled in the product.
