File permissions question

Hi there,

Getting ready to go live with my site and noticed that I have a few main folders that have permission 777. All files and folders within these main folders are also set to 777.

The main folders are

- resources
- image
- extensions
- downloads

Is this how it is supposed to be or should I change permissions to something else?

These directories should be writable for uploading new images...etc
The permissions based on server configuration chmod 0755 or 0777
