Oder Pending customer email

 I know I must be missing something. When a customer places an order I get an email marked Pending but the customer doesn't receive anything but when I update the order I click on notify customer and they get an email the order has been shipped. Is there a way for the customer to receive a "Order Pending" email when they place the order?

What is your mailer (php or smtp)? Check that your mailer do not block the email
