General Discussion / My Abantecart site is down -- help!
« on: February 21, 2024, 06:46:21 PM »
I set up my Abantecart site a few years ago.  Got EXCELLENT help from folks here, and once set up, it has been running seamlessly.

NOW I have a problem, and I hope someone can help.

My platform is Hostmonster.  I have been using them for years, and their service and support has been phenomenal -- until now.  On January 10th my e-mail stopped working.  I called and got runaround.  Long story short, I've called MANY times and have received no help whatsoever -- just shuck and jive.  Currently, thanks to a third party, I can get e-mail through Microsoft mail, but that's all.  I've complained and complained, resulting only in frustration.

But that's e-mail, I posted this for background.  TODAY I went to my Abantecart page, and all I'm getting is a blank screen..  Have tried throughout the day, it's gone completely.  I called Hostmonster once again, got more shuck and jive, and was finally told it's not their problem and that's Abantecart's fault.

Has Abantecart changed something?  All I know is the site is down.  Is there some way this can be checked?  Also, the overall service is so bad now that I'm ready to change platforms.  Will there be some way to move my site elsewhere without having to start from scratch?  There are so many products, and so much work, that if I can't move, or get it working. I may have to delete it entirely and quit doing e-commerce.  I'm hoping you can help.  Thanks!

General Discussion / Is it possible to change prices in bulk?
« on: September 17, 2021, 10:37:29 PM »
I'm sure a lot of us are dealing with this right about now -- prices jumping.

Sure enough, I just got an e-mail from my supplier, their entire product line has gone way up in price.

If it's a single item, or a few items, it's not hard to make the changes.  Simply go to the Products page, type in a key word, an when you see the product in question, simply adjust the price and save.

However I have a number of products (car stereos) that are specific to certain cars.  Although it's only one product, there are several listings.  For example, a model 230 has just gone up in price.  There's a SKU number for a 230 to fit a 1964 Mustang, another to fit a 57 Chevy, etc.  The 230 has pages and pages of SKU numbers, all of them the same price.

Changing the price means cut & paste, cut & paste, and it takes a long time to update them all.  Is there a shortcut somewhere that would allow me to update EVERY 230 in one shot?  This would be a huge timesaver.

Thanks!

Extension Support / UPS shipping problem
« on: May 04, 2021, 08:51:57 PM »
Hopefully I can get some help here.  When I first set up AbanteCart I had loads of questions, and the help I got here was beyond superb!

Overall it has been running well, but now I've got an issue:

First off, my store in not my mainstream business.  I've been working 18-hour days which is great but wears you out, and I only get occasional orders from the store.  In other words you can call me a newbie, because I don't use it enough to be really proficient.

A short time ago I began getting orders, all of them asking to ship USPS, which I thought was strange because UPS is better for most of these orders.  Then my supplier chimed in and asked why all my orders were USPS.  So I disabled the USPS extension.

Today I think I found out why.  I got an e-mail from a customer who is trying to place an order but it gets blocked when he selects shipping.  His only option is UPS and it doesn't accept it.

I can tell you this much -- I don't use my UPS account much anymore, as I use Shipstation for all my stuff from the shop.  However, just last week I indeed used my UPS account, so it's certainly active.

Sp -- any ideas why AbanteCart orders are being rejected by UPS?  Where can I begin troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

How-to questions / Adding options to products
« on: January 04, 2021, 09:12:00 PM »
First off, installing AbanteCart has been a wonderful experience!  Support has been outstanding!  I now have my online store configured, it's up and running, I'm getting orders, and things are humming along smoothly.  I am grateful.

But now with a new year, I've just got thrown a new curve.  On the site I sell stereos designed to fit classic cars.  Each of these stereos is available to custom-fit a specific car, a Mustang for example, another fits a Camaro, yet another fits a 57 Chevy, etc., such that a single model, such as a USA-630, has lots of SKU numbers to match the various car models they support.  It's all in place and working well.  Now for the curve -- certain stereo models are now available, bundled with a Bluetooth module for a special price.  In other words you can buy a stereo for a 57 Chevy, or for a little more, you can buy the stereo bundled with a Bluetooth module for a price savings over buying each separately.

So ideally, when a customer sees a description of a certain stereo, he can see the price for the stereo itself, and also a price for the stereo bundled with the Bluetooth.

How is this done?  This is new territory for me.  If you have information on how to proceed, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks!

Installation and Configuration / Logo sizes
« on: November 16, 2020, 09:38:13 PM »
The big day has arrived!

I've been spending the past several weeks getting AbanteCart installed and configured, have received LOTS of fantastic help along the way, and have been loading in all the products.  Last night I finished -- ready to rock 'n roll!

Today I got my first order.  Everything appears to be working great, with one big exception.  I got an e-mail notifying me of the order, and it's difficult to read and impossible to print because my store logo is HUGE!  I obviously need to cut it down to size.

Now the big question:  is there a place within AbanteCart where I can resize the logo in the e-mail?  This same logo in other places looks fine, just the e-mail.  Also, I don't know if the customer got the same whopper-size logo as well.  Should I go somewhere and resize this, or do I need to cut it, go to Photoshop and cu the size, and reinstall it?

In the same light, each product has the Custom Autosound logo displayed, but in this case it's tiny.  Again, what's the best way to resize?

Thanks!

Installation and Configuration / How to sort products
« on: October 17, 2020, 11:32:15 AM »
I've got a question about product sorting.  There's sort order  I get that -- but in the store itself, products seem to be listed as default by Date Old>New.  It is easily changed to various selections such as Name A-Z, Price Low.High, etc., but it seems the default is always Date Old>New.

How can I change the default sort order to Name A-Z for a particular category?  Or all categories, if that's what's required?

Thanks!

I'm still setting up, and am pretty happy with things overall.  I've been arranging categories and uploading products, all is going well.

But a few more questions:  First, I'm using Paypal and it's currently in sandbox mode.  So I'd like to test things out.  What should I expect?  Can I place an order, will it ask for a credit card, I'd like it to go through the motions and send e-mails, but of course not charge anything as it is a test.  I'm basically asking how to do this, and what to expect before I actually run it.  I think years ago with the old one, someone placed an order at the right moment and there we were!  Didn't need to test.  This time I want to check it out first.

Next question:  text boxes, is there a way to change the size and font?  Most of the text looks pretty good as it stands, but there are a couple of places where I'd like to enlarge the text and change the font, if possible.

Third question:  Everything looks good in the store, except my logo and brand is generally blue.  The trim and some of the text is teal.  Is it possible to change it?

Thanks, as always.  Really hoping to go live before long

Installation and Configuration / Special thanks
« on: August 24, 2020, 09:33:47 PM »
I have run into a few hurdles getting things set up, and the folks here have gone above and beyond to help me get it all straightened out.

A long time ago I was in electronics school, and we built a simple volt-ohm meter.  But the meter itself was only part of the project.  We were each told to write a manual for it, showing how to make various measurements, how to manage accuracy, how to read the dial scale, etc.  We were required to not only build it and figure out how to use it, but become so familiar that we can write it all down to show to others.  I can still hear the instructor describe the meaning of it -- "Imagine you're selling this meter,  You send with it a paper that says, "Congratulations, you just bought the best meter in the world.  Good luck with it!"  No, it is nothing without the documentation and support.

In the world of computers, we're dealing with systems far more advanced than a simple meter.  And yet, in far too many cases, that simple "good luck with it!" is all too familiar.  Documentation and support are half the battle.  It has been a refreshing surprise to find it here.  Being an open source program I wasn't expecting it, but some folks have gone above and beyond to help me get set up.

Everything I've seen so far with AbanteCart has been first class.  Over the past few weeks I've become familiar with things, and very soon I'll be putting it to the ultimate test.  If I happen to run into another bug, I'm confident I can get the support I need.  This is such a huge contrast from my previous software!

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Installation and Configuration / No Shipping Options -- MAJOR letdown!
« on: August 22, 2020, 10:30:37 PM »
I have everything configured and ready to go, albeit only one product.  So I went to the store and tried ordering it.

Flat rate shipping $2.00.  That's it!  Where's UPS?  Where's USPS?

I checked into Shipping Options and flat rate was enabled.  I thought I had it DISabled, but whatever.  Disabled it.  Now there's no shipping at all!

I've already gone through setting up UPS -- to the letter, every step.  I've got the code, have it enabled.  I've set up USPS, followed instructions to the letter.  Got the code, everything is set up.

My one-and-only product is set to require shipping.  Weight os 3 pounds,.  Everything is cool there.

With the UPS and with the USPS Modules, I have both of them set for all zones.  I've tried with auto select on and with it off.  No difference, does not appear in either case.

This is a HUGE disappointment, as the reason I'm moving to AbanteCart in the first place is to get the shipping working.

So what is my next step? Give up and go back to the old store?  I'm completely stuck here!

Installation and Configuration / About us, newsletter signup
« on: August 22, 2020, 09:57:38 AM »
I've installed AbanteCart, and to be honest I've loved everything about it so far.  The documentation is great, the forum has been helpful, and I've been going through every inch of it to get things set up and am almost there.

In fact, there ate two things I need to tackle before loading up with products and going live.  One of course is to test it in sandbox mode, try it out and maje sure everything is cool.  But the other is configuring the main page.

On the bottom left is a block that says "About Us."  Right now it talks about AbanteCart, as obviously a sample.  I don't want it, how do I turn it off?  There is a place where I can do this, there's a switch where it's turned on, and I turn it off and save, but it still appears on the storefront.  O want to remove it.  Contact information is also there -- that's configured and is cool, ready to go.  But on the right is another one -- Newsletter Signup.  I won't be sending newsletters, I want this removed as well.  I cannot find anything at all regarding this one.  How do I remove it?

Thanks!

Installation and Configuration / Payment questions
« on: August 15, 2020, 10:26:58 PM »
I've been setting up AbanteCart a little at a time, taking my time because (a) business is all-time record and I haven't had much time, and (b) I'm trying to read instructions as I go along, making sure I understand.  I HAVE made lots of progress but still have more to go -- but I really like everything I see.

That being said, I have a few questions related to payment.  Since I['ve always handled online payments through Paypal, this is what I want to use with AbanteCart.  I've set up Paypal Standard.  There is also a Paypal Express -- what is the difference?  I would assume Paypal Standard is the tried-and-true method, but would like to know if Express has any advantages.

Second, about all I had to do to set up Paypal was write in my e-mail address.  Is there some other whopping big security code that I've missed?  I did notice in the instructions there is an IPN, what is that?

I also have it set to Sandbox mode.  I assume this will ignore any transactions until I'm ready to go live, at which time I turn off sandbox.

Lastly, and quite important, I can't seem to find any reference about sales tax.  It should be set so that anyone ordering from Florida pays 7% tax, while anyone outside Florida pays nothing.  Where do I go to set this up?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Installation and Configuration / USPS Shipping
« on: July 25, 2020, 10:32:36 PM »
Okay, I have another stupid, basic question.

Please pardon me for asking so many questions in this manner, but I'm taking very slow steps to ensure I'm doing things right.

Installing USPS was too easy.  My former software -- it took 9 years and I never did get it working.  Here, I installed it and bada bing!

I turned it on and I turned the flat rate default module off.  So I'm assuming that every order will have a shipping calculation based on USPS.

Within that module, or extension if you prefer, just below the enable switch there is a debug switch, which I left off.  I left everything else as is.  What is this debug?  Should I keep it off, or do I need it in some way?

There were options on that pae for adding box dimensions, etc., which obviously I don't know and will change with each order anyway.  I did put in a name and password, not quite sure why I need this.  Can this extension calculate a shipping cost based solely on weight?  That's all I have for most of the products.

Thanks in advance.  Although a newbie, my experience with AbanteCart so far has been really pleasant.

Installation and Configuration / SSL certificate
« on: July 23, 2020, 09:13:50 PM »
Brand new to this.  I've just installed AbanteCart and am starting to set up.  I've printed out the "Going live checklist from the documentation.  Step 1 is install an SSL certificate.  Note:  your domain name with and without the www part to be two different websites.

Huh?  Sorry, but it isn't taking me long to get lost.  What do I need to do here?

Thanks in advance.

While I'm here, step 2 is payment processor.  I use Paypal.  Years ago I had set up the old site, and I sure don't remember how I did it but I recall it was just a few clicks.  Anything I should watch out for?

Installation and Configuration / Install Error
« on: July 18, 2020, 09:20:41 PM »
First off, let me say that before installing Abantecart I signed on and asked a few questions about it, and received some very nice answers.  Based mainly on this type of support, I would like to install this and try it out.

To be brief, here's what I'm doing:  I run a business related to radios from classic cars.  Part of this is an onlin sore where customers can order speakers and stereos.  I'm currently using OS-Commerce and have come to hate it.  I want to install Abantecart, configure it and load products into it, then change the links and remove the old software.  My website by the way is with Hostmonster.

I've tried to install Abantecart, and have run into a roadblock.  Hostmonster, who usually gives me great support, can't seem to figure this out.  I was told that my php.ini file has been updated to 7.3.  Still won't work.  Any advice?  I'm enclosing a screenshot.

I might add that I see no indication of which folder it's talking about.  I would suspect that the old software is in a subfolder called OS-Commerce, and this would make a new subfolder called Abantecart.  Is this true?  Do I need to make a subfolder manually?  If so, how do I do this?  Sure, I could make a subfolder easily enough, but how do I firect Abantecart installation to go there?

General Discussion / Questions about Abantecart platform
« on: July 15, 2020, 10:14:18 PM »
Introducing myself:  I'm Gary Tayman, and I run a business related to radios/stereos for collector cars.
As part of my business, I have online shopping for speakers, accessories, and a few stereos.
All of these online orders are drop shipped from a company in California.

The e-commerce started for me when Sams Club offered webspace for business members.  I set up a store and it worked well, but one day it came to an end.  So I looked around and found another program.  It was easy to set up, and works well except for one huge problem:  shipping.  The only module that works at all is a table rate, which is fair for US orders but not for overseas.  I've had orders from Germany and Switzerland, where the shipping was $12.  Unacceptable.  I've tried asking for support, all I got was snarky answers about installing new modules -- the instructions of which require a PhD in programming for NASA.  Seriously, how hard is it to calculate shipping?  E-commerce without shipping is like driving a car without wheels.  I've asked again, I won't repeat the nasty answers I got.  I'm done.

So I'm looking for a new software program, and Abantecart looks interesting.  But I must ask before spending time with it -- how are the shipping modules?  I won't be using any links or channels but I simply want to charge something in the ballpark for shipping cost, whether it ships to Pittsburgh or Copenhagen.

In fact I don't think, at least for now, I'll be using any channels at all except for payment via Paypal.  I'll process the orders here, and e-mail the vendor with the information myself.

Sounds pretty simple, but I've had a rorugh time of it.  Does this sound like something that Abantecart can tackle?

Thanks!
