instead of the zoom window i would like to have a popup window instead on the product page is there easy way to do this ?

You need to change some PHP, css and Javascript.

 Default template ( not default_html5)  offers this feature. You can enable this template and check the code and integrate into default_html5 template

The lightbox_html5 plugin https://marketplace.abantecart.com/lightbox_html5 allows you to open main product images in a window that floats directly over the page.
