Following on from this, I need to do the same for the guest checkout form. I have removed the 'required' field for telephone in 'guest_step_1 'but cannot find the correct .tpl to remove the error message. Could you please give me the location. Thanks.

I presume you are referring to the customer area in the admin pages. Even when logged out of admin, the store login page does not display the guest account option.
The only other editing I have done was to modify the storefront/controller/pages/account/create.php and the storefront/model/account/customer.php files at your suggestion to remove the requirement for a customer to include a telephone number.
I have also tried replacing these files with the originals but with no effect on the login page.

I have certainly done some editing but as far as I recall only language definitions, header/footer templates and the stylesheet.

That is extraordinary! It was (not unnaturally since that is my home country) set to 'British English'. I have reset it to 'English' (presumably American) and it now works.

iPad 2 running IOS6 and the cart is under construction at lapothecary.co.uk/store/index.php?rt=index/home.
I should also add that only Chrome and Atomic Web work correctly. It is only Safari that does not, but only on iPad - the PC version is fine.

The error occurs when accessing storefront "store/index.php?rt=index/home" but only when using Safari.
