how do i upload photos to the server so that the photos on the banner will be visible to others?

Hello. If you want to change images in the HTML banners you should upload images via FTP and change html code with new path to image see video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehKTDBqsNM)
But if you want to edit graphic banner block  - you need to edit/create new Banner using Admin->Design->Banner manager see documentation (http://www.abantecart.com/ecommerce-documentation/42-admin-user-manual/design/blocks-user-manual/117-banner-block)
