Title: help with updating configuration of site?

so, either I'm completely brain dead, this isn't possible, or something similar:
I'd like to update the look of my site, with something akin to 3 giant buttons (either side by side or vertical) taking the user to different product categories.
Right now, I'm playing with my test site and si_custom_theme template.  not having a lot of luck
assuming you understand what I'm looking to do, can someone direct me towards an appropriate set of instructions, please?
