Fastest way - in Admin panel -  Design > Layout 
choose HOME PAGE on the left menu,
hover over the section called Main Page Promo
click on the Edit

There are minimum requirements stated in the docs,  I am looking to confirm maximum versions known to work with version 1.1.8

Can anyone confirm that these work  or give me the highest versions known to work.
Any comment on rather mySQL or mySQLI is recommended would be appreciated too.

Linux - CentOS 6.4 -
 Apache 2.4.x - The .x is a minimal release that can and does change frequently. The major build is 2.4
 MySQL 5.5.x - OR MySQL 6.x. would be preferred
 PHP - PHP 5.5.x -

Gordon answered you about the spiral and how to change that, which it seems you've already accomplished - good for you.

But on the second part where you want to tag things in addition to Sale - it is more than just the graphic.  In order for the sale tag to appear you need to place the item on sale -  this flags a field in the database and the code knows this and displays according to all the css coding.

In order for you to use this type of method for other tags you would need to add fields and css coding and add an entry point in the admin panel for each type of flag.

Here's some alternative ways that don't require code and database change that might work for you:
There is a section in the home page titled Latest -  you could emboldened that area with descriptors after the Latest Products tag,  you can also change it to say NEWEST PRODUCTS or whatever term you wish. 

You could also simply put your own NEW tag with the product description - this would not show up on the home or categories pages, just the product page.

Version 1.1.8  - demo products installed  - fresh install - not upgrade

There seems to be an issue on the User Group/Edit User Group grid for the sort request -  I can not get any of the columns to change the sort.  The Arrow changes directions for ascending or descending,  but there is NO change in the column displays. 

the filter does work,  but the sort request in any column still fails.

Sandy is your requirement to only show Catalog - due to wanting to limit the access of certain users to see and/or modify only that section?

If so - you can do that by using User Groups to select what a group can do -  there is Access (see ) and Modify (change/edit)  for every function.
Turn on the ones you want, leave the others off.

Then make a new user - and assign them to the User Group you wish.  You can can their Group at any time. 

This would seem to be a much simpler and more effective and efficient way to manage what I believe you are trying to do.
