After upgrading to ver 1.4.4, the footer links on the bottom of my home page became encased in a blue black rectangle. Tried everything but could not remove the blue/black rectangle. Any ideas?

I think you are seeing a caching artifact, as it looks great to me. Clear your AbanteCart and browser cache.
You may have a bigger problem here though -- all of the links in your top menu are broken, and it seems the store is loaded completely with sample data.
