Title: SKU to use when multiple options for product
Post by: drdebsmith on October 23, 2026, 12:36:35 PM
I have a number of items where I have multiple color options for the same product, so I assigned a unique SKU for each color.  For example, Christmas Cord 1.5mm, I used CC-15-COP for copper, and so on.  What SKU do I enter on the General Product Page?  Can I use wildcards for the main product page (i.e. CC-15-***), and then use the actual SKU on the Options page?  When I use the first item in the list as the SKU on the product page, it comes up in the cart, although the correct option does appear as well with its correct SKU.

Hello.
The SKU field on the main product edit page (General tab) is typically used for products without options or products where options are not required.
If you sell a product with required options, such as different colors, you can leave the SKU field on the main product page blank. Instead, enter the unique SKU for each option value under the Options tab. For example, Color > Copper would have SKU CC-15-COP, and each additional color would have its own SKU. There is no need to use wildcards (such as CC-15-***) in the main product SKU field. Simply leave it blank and assign the appropriate SKUs to the individual option values.
