Title: Critical Error

Abantcart overwrites my home page file (index.html) or redirects any access to /static_pages/index.php which report a critical error as follows: "There has been a critical error processing your request"
I reinstate my index.html file and it goes to the right home page the first time but the next time this error comes up again.
I am not using Abantcart on this website so I cannot understand why this is happening.
Can anybody please help?
