generally, image sitemap is necessary if in case you have large number of images probably for an e-commerce site, else it's not recommended in general case as far as i know.

that's really an awesome thing to know that rich snippets are improving ranking, since google introduced rich snippets, many sites are trying for obtaining rich results but unfortunately google display only for few sites despite markup
