system->settings->additional Images Add Resourse fails w/cryptic message

I am trying to upload a new image and when I select upload file and select an image from my computer I receive

Error: abort

What does this mean? How can I change the image?

Where do you add this image? What section?

Anything in the error log?

Check that directory "resources" has write permissions for all users

I go to system->settings->additional Images->Store Logo->Edit
I see the error under System->Messages

The directory "resources" is 0755 should it be 0777?

I changed the directory images and all of the containing data to 777 and I am able to upload images now.
